The paper discusses the alternatives investigated by ESA for the Mars landers aeroshell thermal protection system (TPS) and summarizes the results of the major trade studies undertaken. Two reference configurations selected for further study on the analytical design verification and manufacturing aspect investigation are described and analyzed. The expected margins are given for all the TPS elements, and a preliminary validation file is drawn for both concepts.
