A study is made of the relationship existing between the magnetic field and the generation, evolution and decay of a dark filament on the sun. It is shown that, during the first stage of its evolution, a filament generated at the outer boundary of the active region penetrated the active region along the polarity inversion line following a decrease in magnetic field at this line. An abrupt increase in the magnetic field at different sections of the polarity inversion line resulted in a sudden disappearance of the entire filament.
