A brief history of stochastic Fermi acceleration is presented together with a review of the astrophysical sites of its application. A derivation of the transport equation appropriate to the process is outlined, and its relation to the transport equation for quasilinear energy diffusion is discussed. Finally stochastic Fermi acceleration is assessed as a mechanism for the acceleration of solar cosmic rays.
