The correlation between AE, Ap and Dst indices, on the one hand, and
nighttime critical frequencies, on the other, in northern midlatitudes
in investigated. The correlation is closest for the Dst-index. A
possible mechanism involving the effect of ring currents on the electron
density in the mid-latitude F-region is mentioned.
