The NASA/Science Office of Standards and Technology (NOST) FITS Support Office maintains a directory of FITS material available by anonymous ftp from nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov/fits. The main directory contains FITS documents, including among them the NOST Definition of FITS and User's Guide. A basics_info.txt file, adapted from a monthly posting to the Usenet sci.astro.fits newsgroup, provides a comprehensive discussion of available FITS documents and software and where they can be obtained, whether at NSSDC or other locations. A software subdirectory contains FITS software developed by or collected by the FITS office. An errtest subdirectory contains a collection of primary headers, one that is in full conformance with the FITS standards and practices, and others that contain errors and departures from recommended practices of varying levels of severity. These files can be used to test the ability of FITS readers to cope with errors.
