The effect of shear on the cosmological distance and image in an inhomogeneous universe is investigated by solving the optical scalar equation perturbatively. We estimate the statistical properties of these quantities in cold dark-matter models for general cosmological parameters. We show that the effect of shear can be safely neglected for a light ray passing through a linear density inhomogeneity, which justifies the approximation used in previous studies. We also obtain an analytic expression for the skewness of the probability distribution of amplification in the Einstein-de Sitter universe.
