The difficulty in comparing observations with theoretical evolutionary tracks in the Herztsprung-Russell diagram is reviewed. A number of distance-independent paramenters are suggested as alternative means to test evolutionary models of planetary nebulae. The need for a ionization-dynamical model to provide proper interpretation of observed physical parameters is emphasized. The procedure on how an integrated model of planetary nebula evolution can be constructed is outlined.
