We have performed stellar calculations for initial masses between 1 and 7 solar mass from the main sequence through the asymptotic giant branch towards the stage of white dwarfs. Our calculations indicate that massive central stars fade much slower than hitherto assumed leading to the prediction that the least luminous central stars should have masses of 0.65 solar mass. It is emphasized that post-asymptotic giant branch timescales depend strongly on the asymptotic giant branch history. Furthermore, we discuss the possibility of two thermal pulses during the post-asymptotic giant branch evolution.
