Quiescent prominences are modeled as a sequence of slender static flux tubes arranged behind each other and embedded in an isothermal corona. We take into account a simple energy equation which describes the balance between radiative losses and mechanical heating while neglecting heat conduction. This leads to a polytropic relation for the prominence plasma. Solutions of the equations describing the large-scale mechanical equilibrium and the simplified energy balance of a single flux tube are determined. The general behavior of the solutions can be described analytically. Only the explicit path of the flux tube has to be determined by numerical integration. Numerical values of temperature and density are well within the ranges observed in prominences.
