High resolution optical spectroscopy, low resolution infrared spectroscopy and UBVRI-JHK photometry of the poorly studied symbiotic star V 919 Sgr are presented. Basic systemic properties are discussed. Puzzling large amplitude infrared variability is demonstrated. The available data do not firmly establish that the star underwent an outburst in 1991 but the behaviour of its high excitation lines and blue continuum mimics classical symbiotic outbursts.
