I examine the largest available sample of ~ 100 distant clusters of galaxies (to z ~ 1), identified optically by M. Postman et al. (1994) through a matched filter (density profile and luminosity function) technique. I present the catalog and describe the evolution of fundamental cluster properties such as density profile, central density, luminosity and color. The analysis of these properties has both evolutonary and cosmological implications, most notably the Butcher--Oemler effect. I expand the original study by Butcher & Oemler (1984) to redshifts approximately twice as distant and relate the results to possible cluster formation scenerios.
