Redshift surveys of large numbers galaxies at z > 0.5 have been made possible by a new generation of efficient multi-object spectrographs. These new surveys allow us to characterize for the first time the population of "normal" galaxies at a time when the Universe was less than half its present age. Evolution in the luminosity function and in the clustering of galaxies can be traced, while detailed studies of the spectra and morphologies of individual galaxies give clues about the physical processes controlling the evolution. Recent results from the Canada France Redshift Survey, consisting of 700 galaxies with median = 0.55, will be presented and discussed.
