A technique has been developed to determine the position as well as the shape of digitized photographic images. The method makes use of the hyperbolic tangent function and has been applied to a plate of three exposures obtained with the 0.5m Van Vleck refractor. The results reveal slightly elongated images with a consistent angle of orientation for all exposures. The elongation is too small to be detected by visual inspection.
