Spectra of the 3600-4700 Å region of the spectrum of the carbon star V Hya reveal a rich emission-line spectrum similar to those found in objects where shock waves occur. A radial velocity of -155 km s-1 relative to the star indicates that we see the nearer lobe of the bipolar jet already known in V Hya. The unusually strong violet continuum and the absorption in the higher Balmer lines, which yield a radial velocity slightly different from that of the carbon star, may arise in the hypothetical companion.
