Cosmological Models: Galaxy Counts, Galaxy Counts: Hubble Space Telescope

Scientific paper

Recent HST Medium Deep Survey and Deep Survey have observed a large number of morphologically peculiar (MP) galaxies. The number counts of these abnormal galaxies can be understood in the frame of gravitational interaction, in terms of merging by Press & Schechter formalism with minimal assumptions on nongravitational effects. The authors derive the evolution of the luminosity function of MP galaxies and interpretate the count observations with parameters of structure formation. They discover that MP galaxies are slightly fainter than normal galaxies.
