The subcoulomb breakup of ^8B on a ^58Ni target has been measured using the Notre Dame-University of Michigan radioactive beam facility. These data are primarily sensitive to the E2 component of the breakup yield, and thus provide a valuable supplement to Coulomb breakup experiments at intermediate energies(T. Motobayashi et al.), Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 2680 (1994).. The experiment uses an integral technique which gives the E2 breakup cross section as a function of the astrophysical factor S_17 for radiative capture of protons on ^7Be. Implications for the solar neutrino problem will be discussed.
