During an extensive search for new asteroids with the GPO instrument at ESO a rather bright asteroid was discovered on the night of February 23/24, 1987. The orbital elements obtained from the treatment of the initial observations by means of an improved method of the variation of geocentric distances is compared with the osculating elements deduced from all available observations.
