Results are presented of experiments concerning the collapse of a gaseous protogalaxy by using a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method with constant smoothing length h. The initial conditions are derived by an N-body simulation of the early phase of evolution of a galaxy. The extreme case in which the protogalaxy is completely gaseous is considered, and the ability of inelastic collisions to organize the motion is investigated. The fraction of direct orbits is initially 55 percent, but reaches finally a level of 95 percent. The negative angular momentum is absorbed mainly at the first shock (collapse of minor axis). In the subsequent evolution it decreases gradually to negligible values. The problems encountered by the SPH method are discussed.
