The amount and distribution of the molecular component in the spiral galaxy M81 are investigated. The results reveal an apparent central depletion and a broad distribution located downstream from the spiral shock front and stretched across the arm width. At a smaller scale the CO emission appears to be associated with the dust features but not with the giant radio H II regions. Simulations of the tidal interaction of M81 with its two main neighbors M82 and NGC3077 show that the restricted three-body approach successfully explains external features, bridges, and tails pulled from the galaxies. However, the approach seems to impose either very low mass ratios between the companions and M81 or too large pericenter distances.
