Active galactic nuclei (AGN) exhibit various observational characteristics including broad and narrow emission lines and significant variabilities with large ranges of time scales. However, AGNs are believed to be powered by the accretion processes onto a supermassive black hole and these various activities are believed to be understood as an aspect effect. In particular, type 2 AGNs including Seyfert 2 galaxies and narrow line radio galaxies exhibit only narrow emission lines. The important role has been played by spectropolarimetry, which shows the existence of broad emission lines in the polarized spectra of type 2 AGNs, establishing the unification of type 2 AGNs. Broad absorption line (BAL) quasars exhibit broad blue-shifted absorption in the permitted emission lines, forming 10 per cent of radio-quiet quasars. Spectropolarimetry of BAL quasars is also consistent with the hypothesis that BAL quasars possess an equatorial wind with a low covering factor. We review the scattering processes and atomic physics that may be relevant to the spectropolarimetric observations of these AGNs including Thomson scattering, Raman scattering of Lyβ, and resonance scattering of permitted lines.
