Lupus I is a nearby filamentary star forming region, thought to be the youngest of the Lupus complex. Its study will help us understand how a filament starts to collapse into forming stars, and ultimately, can reveal remnants of the star formation triggering event of the cloud. We propose to observe the J=1-0 transitions of 12CO, 13CO and C18O simultaneously, covering 1675 sq. arcmin as a shallow survey (using the new fast-mapping mode of MOPRA), followed by a deeper coverage of another 350 sq. arcmin. Further spectra of optically thick lines tracers of gas infall into the cores (e.g. HCN and HCO+) will be taken towards some of the known cores. With the 30? beam of MOPRA, these observations will be the highest resolution data of Lupus I in molecular lines thus far. It will finally allow resolving the cores and outflows as well as provide tools for a detailed study of the velocity and physical properties of the cloud, yet poorly understood. The upcoming observations of Lupus I with SCUBA2 and Herschel will complement these observations and allow a better understanding of the early stages of Star Formation.
