Two fundamental unresolved issues in gravitational physics are the origin of the cosmological constant (dark energy), whose existence is suggested by the observed acceleration of the universe, and the origin of mass. Since all matter particles are represented by spinor fields, it seems natural to inquire whether the gravitational interaction of the spinor fields can illuminate the situation. In an earlier paper [1] I have shown that it is possible to obtain both spacetime curvature and torsion as parts of the spin curvature. Therefore I consider the possibility that the spin curvature is fundamental. Assuming a standard Yang-Mills Lagrangian for the spin curvature then produces a cosmological constant term, and similarly the Dirac Lagrangian with spin connection coupling may produce a mass term for the spinors. Three explicit theories are considered; one leads to mass for the spinors but an oscillating universe, the second yields an accelerating universe but no mass for the spinors, but the third yields both.
