The basic evidence of the Big Bang is reviewed, and the features that any structure-formation model must have - matter and seeds - are discussed. It is shown that most matter in the universe is dark and invisible; some of this dark matter is made of protons, neutrons, and electrons, but most of it is seen in a form of massive neutrinos, axions, or neutralinos. The seeds might either be small random-density fluctuations in this matter, or some defects in the structure of space-time itself such as cosmic strings, walls, or textures. Attention is focused on a cold-dark-matter model with random quantum-fluctuation seeds undergoing reevaluation due to new large-scale observations, and other models with late phase transitions generating the seeds, or with topological defects as seeds.
