The predicted abundances of D, He-3, and Li-7 are reviewed in the context of the standard big bang model, and estimates of the present and inferred primordial abundances are examined. Upper and lower limits to the inferred abundances are compared with theory, leading to upper and lower bounds to the present nucleon abundance. These bounds are used in the context of an overview of the observational situation regarding primordial helium, and it is argued that the standard model is consistent with the data and that the number of lepton families is four or less. Important questions and suggested lines of research in this area are listed.
