The cosmic ray pressure profile as a function of height above the galactic plane is determined by applying the diffusion model of cosmic ray propagation and assuming that the interstellar medium is filled with hot, rarefied gas. The halo gas is considered as a fully ionized hydrogen plasma, and equipartition is assumed to hold between the thermal energy of the gas and the magnetic field energy. The magnetic field is regarded as stochastic and statistically isotropic. The derived system of equations is numerically solved, and it is found that the Galaxy should have a large halo with a characteristic size of roughly 10 kpc.
