High-resolution X-ray observations of Mrk 279 with the Einstein
Observatory clearly establish it as the optical counterpart of the X-ray
source 3A1349 +700 and resolve the ambiguity introduced by the
observations of Dower et al. (1980). Mrk 279 exhibits X-ray and optical
properties typical of other Seyfert 1 galaxies.
