Photoelectric UBV photometry is presented for stars in Tombaugh 1 and for XZ CMa, 2.6 d Cepheid lying 9 arcmin north of the cluster centre. These observations demonstate that XZ CMa probably has an unresolved blue companion which is about 2.5 magnitudes fainter in V, and that, although it lies within the boundaries of the cluster corona XZ CMa is unlikely to be a member of Tombaugh 1. The latter is found to be a moderately old open cluster lying at a distance of about 1.26 kpc, well foreground to the Cepheid. The cluster colour-magnitude diagram is in some respects unusual for the cluster's age group and richness class, being well populated with red giants and subgiants, and possibly containing a blue straggler as well.
