A theory of gravitation with torsion that is derived from a second-rank tensor potential is generalized by letting the gravitational constant become a scalar field, along with the addition of a kinetic term, as in the Brans - Dicke generalization of ordinary gravity. The material Lagrangian is taken to be that of the Dirac minimally coupled type. A discussion of the string frame versus the Einstein frame coupling is presented, and two main results follow. One is that, as a special case, the low energy effective string theory Lagrangian results. The other result is that the Einstein coupling may be adopted, in which case the scalar field, in one regime, is very small. This solves both the problem of the strong dilaton effect of string theory and the large 0264-9381/13/6/002/img1 concern of the Brans - Dicke theory.
