Recent progress in understanding spherical accretion onto black holes in QSOs is reviewed. Results are summarized which suggest that the spherical accretion mechanism is a good explanation for QSO luminosity and spectral shape. Criticisms of the Blandford and Znajek (1977) mechanism and the membrane paradigm of black hole astrophysics are examined.
