The Rayleigh-Taylor instability in hydromagnetics is investigated with the use of the method of multiple scales. It is shown that when the wavenumber K is equal to the critical wavenumber Kc, the amplitude modulation of a standing wave can be described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation from which the nonlinear cutoff wavenumber is subsequently derived.
