The infrared fine structure line ratios, Ar II (6.99 μm)/Ar III (8.99 μm) and S III (18.71 μm)/S IV (10.51 μm) give an abundance independent way of examining the excitation conditions in H II regions. Model calculations of the ionization structure of H II regions are performed assuming a constant electron temperature and the on-the-spot approximation for the treatment of the diffuse radiation field. Internal checks and comparisons with more sophisticated computations confirm the validity of these assumptions. Charge transfer reactions are included and the model atmospheres of Kurucz (1979) are used for the flux distribution of the exciting stars. Comparisons are made between the model predicted Ar II/Ar III and S III/S IV ratios and observational data from 16 H II regions.
