The X-ray emission properties of a sample of radio-quiet quasars are used to set a strict upper limit to the fraction of objects which could result from large amplifications due to gravitational lensing. It is shown that no more than 10-20% of the quasars in a flux limited sample can be boosted images of Seyfert 1 type nuclei. It is also shown that this limit adds further evidence to the exclusion of a cosmological density of compact objects in the mass range 1 - 103M_sun;.
