The data yielded by 156 spectrograms of the T Tauri star RW Aur are used to study its spectral variability on time scales varying between 15 min and several days. The results are discussed in light of suggestions concerning the physical cause of the variability of the T Tauri stars. It is noted that the observed spectral variations are not inconsistent with a variable accretion model, but confirmation of this mechanism awaits a deeper knowledge of RW Aur's circumstellar envelope.
