The basic equations for the chemical evolution of galaxies in which the 'simple' closed box model is modified to allow any form of inflow or outflow are examined found that there are quite general limiting constraints on the effects that such can have. Some implications for the actual chemical evolution of galaxies are discussed, and the constraints should also be useful in understanding the behaviour detailed numerical models of galactic chemical evolution involving gas flows.
