The paper discusses the particular class of trajectories which results from the postulate that the total specific impulse during any given period of time is a minimum. It is shown that the optimum-thrust principle leads to two different classes of trajectories: (1) the almost trivial case with identically vanishing thrust and resulting Kepler orbits and (2) nonvanishing thrust and associated non-Keplerian transfer orbits. Analytical closed-form solutions of the underlying variational equations are derived for the very special thrust function that is compatible with this postulate and for the resulting trajectories. An application is made to earth-Mars transfer, where optimal thrust function, total specific impulse, and the corresponding transfer trajectories are quantitatively evaluated and graphically displayed.
