Earth Atmosphere: Lunar Eclipses, Earth: Oblateness

An extended computer analysis of a large quantity of data from a series of lunar eclipses has been undertaken using independently-observed crater timings. The lunar eclipse series to be progressively considered are those of Soulsby (1974-90), Bou\vska (1943-53), and Schmidt (1850-73). By computing the mean umbral enlargement at five possible values of oblateness for the Soulsby series, the dependence of the oblateness on the umbral enlargement has been found. A large number of crater-timing reductions were used to determine the best value of oblateness, this to be used for future predictions.
