This paper investigates the conditions for the occurrence of overstabilities in background polytropes as compared with those for the onset of convection. The combined effects of the adverse temperature gradient, the thermal conduction, the oscillatory mechanisms, the buoyant force, and the appropriate boundary conditions give rise to the existence of overstable oscillations. Viscosity always tends to stabilize oscillations. The onset of overstability is such that the release of the available thermal energy via buoyant force coupled with density variation is balanced synchronously by the amount of energy associated with the oscillations and dissipations. The continuous input of thermal energy required to sustain growing oscillations is derived from the thermal exchange with the surroundings.
