Stellar Kinematics: Proper Motions

Scientific paper

The polar diagram of stellar proper motions positional angles (the Kovalsky-Kapteyn figure) is approximated by an ellipse around the mass centre of the figure for a small sky area. It is possible not only with the exponential ellipsoidal velocity distribution. The solar motion and the Galaxy rotation, assumed the same for all stars in the area, are determined by the mass centre coordinates. The vertex longitude and dispersion ratio along the main axes of the stellar velocity ellipsoid are determined by elements of the ellipse.
