High-resolution spectra have been obtained over a seven-year period for the 7.6 d binary Cepheid W Sgr. Radial velocities measured from these spectra have been combined with those measured with the CORAVEL radial velocity spectrometer and a new orbital solution obtained with the parameters P = 1603 d, K = 1.90 km s-1, e = 0.42. Velocities predicted from this solution have been subtracted from γ-velocities determined for W Sgr at various epochs this century. From the residuals the authors have identified the possible presence of a third component in orbit around the centre of mass of the Cepheid and its companion. This orbit has a tentative period of ≡75 yr and semi-amplitude of 3 km s-1. Linear pulsation models have been calculated for W Sgr assuming different values for the mass. Comparisons with the IUE-determined absolute magnitude, the Baade-Wesselink radius and evolutionary tracks are made. The best agreement between all these factors comes by assuming W Sgr has a mass of ≡6 Msun for blue loop evolution or possibly ≡7 Msun in the case of a first crossing of the instability strip.
