The nature of the distribution of position angles for the 10-20 brightest galaxies in a sample of rich Abell clusters is investigated in order to search for preferred directions or alignment effects. Digitized areas of copies of Palomar Sky Survey plates are used to identify galaxies in rich clusters and measure their orientation. In general, no effect is found. In some special cases a weak effect is present. The strong alignment of the first-ranked galaxy with its cluster found in previous studies is confirmed. The alignment of the first-ranked galaxy with its cluster is shown to be stronger in the most elongated clusters.
