This paper presents a method of obtaining physical parameters of dark cloud without the need for performing new observations, solely based on material already gathered. For this purpose Schmidt photographs of two fields of the ESO/SRC Southern Sky Survey were digitized in both available colors. An automatic starcount technique was applied to these data. The Bahcall and Soneira (1980) model of the Galaxy, in comparison with the results of the automatic starcounts, yields distances for 43 dark clouds in these fields accurate to within 30 percent. Standard techniques of extinction mapping by starcount data give radii of these clouds in the range from 0.2 pc to 1.8 pc and masses of several ten to several hundred times the mass of the sun. The internal density structure of the clouds shows the same power-law index as the relation between the overall mean density of the clouds and their size.
