Scientific paper
H-alpha narrow-band photographs have been used to identify 366 H II regions in the spiral galaxy NGC 2403. Accurate positions, integrated H-alpha fluxes and angular diameters and line intensity ratios are presented for some or all of the regions. It is found that the frequency distribution of the H II region diameters follows van den Bergh's law, and the H-alpha luminosity function is well represented by a power law. The N(+)/S(+) abundance gradient is found to be in agreement with previous determinations based on fewer and brighter regions. The forbidden S II 6717, 6731 A lines are found to be significantly brighter in the diffuse background than in the classical H II regions, probably indicating differences in excitation conditions. The spatial distribution of the H II regions in the plane of the galaxy does not reveal any conspicuous spiral structure. The rate of massive star formation regularly decreases from the center to the outer regions of NGC 2403.
