En 1866, naval engineer Courbebaisse, of Rochefort, was one of the first
three observers of the first crisis ever observed of T CrB. Courbebaisse
was not actually a variable star observer. Nevertheless, this minor
episode allows the portrait of a certain category of amateur astronomer
to be drawn.
