Ultraviolet irradiance data are used to calculate the day-to-day solar variability in the UV from 119 to 420 nm. Using simultaneous total solar irradiance data, we demonstrate that the ultraviolet contributes 46 total solar irradiance variability; and we also estimate that the visual variability is smaller by 29 irradiance variability for 24-hour periods for wavelengths longer than 420 nm. The reduced variability in the visible wavelength range improves the probability that forthcoming, space-based missions to detect extrasolar planets using the photometric method will be successful.
