The Orion molecular complex harbours the richest sample of protostars within 500 pc of the Sun, with over 400 protostars of all evolutionary classes identified with Spitzer. 279 protostars will be observed by the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey (HOPS) open time key program. HOPS, together with mid-infrared spectra and photometry from Spitzer and near-infrared high resolution imaging will allow the determination of the fundamental properties of the protostars. However, little information on the gas in the protostars parent molecular gas exists. There is an initial indication that column density is a major factor in determining the luminosity of protostars. We propose to investigate the gas column density through extremely deep imaging of background sources and measuring the extinction using H-K color excess of background stars and galaxies. In this proposal, we describe a pilot program to demonstrate that NEWFIRM can achieve the depth needed to map high column density gas surrounding protostars in Orion.
