We propose to complete our campaign with NEWFIRM to extend H(alpha) galaxy surveys to higher redshift. Our strategy identifies emission- line galaxies using custom narrowband filters which sample low airglow windows in the near-IR. Observations for the first phase of the survey, targeting H(alpha) emitters at z=0.8, were carried out in 07B and 08B. Here, we describe the second phase which is designed to detect ~300 H(alpha) emitters at z=2.2 and probe observed star formation rates (SFRs) down to ~0.4L^*(~8 h_70^-2 M_&sun; yr^- 1). The H(alpha)-selected dataset will enable a host of studies ranging from the determination of H(alpha) luminosity functions and SFR volume densities during a crucial period when the star formation activity of the Universe was at a maximum, to an examination of the relative biases of other galaxy selection techniques used at intermediate redshift. Further, the requested observations form the critical foundation of a unique overall program for star-forming galaxies at z=2.2 which will leverage the capabilities of a range of instruments and facilities, such as companion Ly(alpha) narrowband imaging with Subaru and ultra-deep H(alpha) imaging over smaller fields with Magellan FourStar.
