Results are presented from a systematic spectral analysis of 39 of the 144 S-type asteroids, whose diversity may have its bases in the coexistence of undifferentiated, partially differentiated, and fully differentiated bodies, as well as the exposure of compositionally distinct units from within metamorphosed and both partially and fully differentiated parent bodies. While no specific parent bodies have been identified within the S-class, silicate mineralogy furnishes a good test of possible ordinary chondritic affinities.
