The thickness of the bow shock front near Venus is estimated on the basis of direct Venera-9 plasma measurements made with a braking potential electron analyzer and modulation ion trap. For the first time simultaneous data have been obtained on electron and ion fluxes and temperatures on both sides of the bow shock along with data on the electron fluxes and energies in the light shadow of the planet. Various determinations of the position of the bow shock from data obtained at different seasons by different spacecraft tend to coincide, which suggests the nonmagnetic nature of the obstacle creating the bow shock. The Venusian bow shock is estimated to be about 10-15 km thick.
