DR. SPENCER'S article on this subject in NATURE of April 17 will have been read with interest by many astronomers who have held some of the views set forth therein for more than twenty years. I am unable to say who it was that first realized that meteoric impacts on the surface of the moon would be of an explosive nature, and would therefore give rise to circular craters; but, so far as I know, this most important consideration was first brought to the public attention of astronomers by the late Prof. A. W. Bickerton, in the course of discussions at meetings of the British Astronomical Association in 19151.
