The evidence that supports the big bang theory of the origin and expansion of the universe is reviewed. Einstein's general theory of relativity as well as the cosmological principle which supposes the universe to be spatially uniform and isotropic are assumed as a basis in a discussion of the expansion dynamics, principal material content, and the radiation content and distribution of the universe. Seven features of the universe which have not yet been explained satisfactorily in terms of the uniform model are surveyed; these features are singularities, horizons, entropy, structure, antimatter, binding energy, and quantum gravity.
